You plugged in last night and still woke to an empty-looking pack. On the Front Range, that’s often cold, not a broken wall unit. Below about 15 degrees, the traction pack can wake to heat itself. Denver’s January normal low sits around 18 degrees. A lot of nights land in that band. If the wall session never started, that heat comes from the pack.

Why a Denver overnight can drain a plugged-in pack

Denver’s official elevation is 5,280 feet at the State Capitol’s west steps. Evergreen sits about 7,200 feet. Idaho Springs is 7,526 feet. Cold air at those heights soaks a parked car for hours.

NWS Boulder puts the January normal low around 18 degrees. In January 2024, Denver fell from 47 to minus 19 in two days. That swing keeps a pack in thermal management all night. Annual snowfall averages in the low-to-mid 50s of inches. A driveway plug can ice, and melt can sit in the port. Dry the port before you blame the car.

Many EVs warm the pack when air sits near or below 15 degrees. That heat lets cells accept charge later. Plug-in doesn’t mean wall power is flowing. If it isn’t, pack heat still uses stored energy.

Recurrent Auto studied more than 30,000 U.S. EVs in winter. On average they kept about 78% of max range at 32 degrees. At 20 degrees they kept about 70%. AAA’s 2026 dynamometer study found about 39% range loss at 20 degrees. Driveway drain is the same chemistry, just quieter. For winter habits that actually help, read How to care for an EV battery through a Denver winter.

Check the charge window before you blame the wall unit

Most EVs let you set a departure time or an off-peak window. Drivers use that to chase cheaper overnight power. It’s also the setting people set once and forget.

The Denver metro isn’t one utility. Xcel Energy covers the core plus Boulder County cities and the Clear Creek towns. It publishes RE-TOU, Optimize Your Charge, and Charging Perks. Those programs push scheduled charging.

CORE Electric Cooperative owns the south-metro Douglas County corridor. That’s Centennial, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Parker, Castle Rock, and Castle Pines. Don’t call Xcel from those streets. CORE’s COREV Charge program is at capacity and closed to new applications.

United Power covers much of the north and northeast, including Brighton electric service and Commerce City. In Thornton, Northglenn, Westminster, Arvada, Broomfield, and Erie, territory can split street by street. Check the bill, not the city name. United’s RTD1 time-of-use rate uses Simple Saver scheduling. Longmont Power and Communications is municipal. Longmont charging questions go to the City, not Xcel.

If the app shows a window that starts after you leave, the car waited. Open the app or the center screen. Look for scheduled charging, charge on departure, or off-peak. Confirm who bills the plug at Who bills a Tesla charge in the Denver metro. That page still helps if you don’t drive a Tesla.

The car may have gone to sleep before the window opened

Plug in at 7 p.m. with a window after midnight. Some cars then drop into a low-power sleep. The session never wakes cleanly. This shows up after a long dwell, then a late plug-in at home. A week in a cold DEN lot off Peña Boulevard can do the same.

Open and close a door. Unlock with the fob. Start climate from the app. If charging begins a few minutes later, the hardware was fine. The computer had gone quiet.

A weak 12-volt can stop the session after it starts

The traction pack doesn’t run the computers that talk to the charger. The 12-volt battery does. If that small battery is weak, a session can start, then drop. Cold makes this worse. A car that sat at DEN can refuse to wake. So can one at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. That’s a jump or an on-site 12-volt replacement, not a dead pack. Read When an EV’s 12-volt dies, the car will not wake before you order a flatbed.

CDOT Safety Patrol will jump a 12-volt on covered freeway segments. It doesn’t bring a charge to an EV. CDOT’s own breakdown pages mention nothing about EV charging. If you’re still in the driveway, that patrol can’t help you.

When the settings were right and it still didn’t charge

Reseat the cable until it clicks. A short wall-mounted lead can creep out under tension.

Look at the home unit’s status light. A fault color or blink pattern usually means the EVSE needs service.

If the breaker tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop. A licensed electrician should look at the panel. Charge Pro DEN doesn’t do that work. We connect you with mobile charging operators, not electricians.

A 120-volt Level 1 overnight is a thin plan in this climate. If that’s your only plug, read Is a Level 1 charger enough through a Denver winter.

If you have to leave and the pack is still low

Skip a long diagnosis if you already needed the car. CRS 42-4-1202 lets a truly disabled vehicle sit on the shoulder with hazards on. Colorado has no statute for a disabled EV. CDOT Safety Patrol still won’t deliver a charge.

Charge Pro DEN is a referral line. We match you with an independent local operator. The operator brings a 240-volt Level 2 source to the car. Tesla drivers get a native NACS plug. Other EVs use a CCS or J1772 adapter. Typical charging time adds about 10 to 20 miles in 15 to 30 minutes. That’s charging time, never an arrival time. The operator quotes you before starting and bills you directly.

If you’re still deciding whether to limp out, start with EV running low on battery: what to do before you’re stuck. For a charge at the driveway, use Mobile EV charging.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the car say charging while the percent never moved?

A window that hadn’t opened yet can look like charging on some screens. A limit you already hit looks the same. Check the schedule and the charge limit first.

Does sitting plugged in without drawing power hurt the pack?

No. The software is choosing not to pull from the wall. The cold-weather cost is pack heat itself, not the idle plug.

Should I keep resetting a tripped charger breaker?

Reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call an electrician. The breaker is doing its job. Charge Pro DEN doesn’t repair home circuits.

Call (720) 738-6950 when you want a mobile-charge referral. Nobody here can promise when an operator arrives. The operator you’re matched with sets the quote.
