AAA vs mobile EV charging comes down to what the truck can do. AAA is a membership club you already know. Many dead-EV calls still end as a flatbed tow. Confirm that in your AAA app before you wait. CDOT Safety Patrol is free on listed Front Range freeways. It’ll jump a 12-volt on those listed segments. It won’t charge the traction pack at all. A mobile EV charge is a different kind of job. An independent operator brings a 240-volt Level 2 source to the bumper.
The state’s free patrol jumps a 12-volt
Most drivers forget CDOT Safety Patrol until they’re already on a shoulder. CDOT’s Division of Maintenance and Operations runs the program. Denver-metro coverage includes I-25 South from 120th Ave to Arapahoe Rd. It also includes I-70 East from Wadsworth to Airport Blvd. Portions of US-6, C-470, and I-225 are on the same list. The I-70 Mountain Corridor runs from Morrison to Vail.
CDOT’s published menu is tires, jumps, fuel, debris, and minor mechanical help. The Safety Patrol page doesn’t mention electric vehicles. CDOT’s breakdown page is silent on EV charging as well. That’s silence in state guidance, not a guess. So the free truck can wake a 12-volt battery. It can’t add miles to the traction pack. If the gauge was already at zero, skip this call. If the car went dark after a freeze, a jump may finish it.
Hours are posted on CDOT’s site, and they’re limited. Front Range weekday windows are 6:00 to 9:30 a.m. A second weekday window runs 2:30 to 7:00 p.m. Weekend hours run from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Mountain Corridor hours run 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Those mountain hours cover Friday through Sunday each week. They also run during significant weather along that corridor. Don’t wait on a patrol that’s off shift.
COtrip.org and the 511 line post I-70 closures. Colorado State Patrol handles crashes, enforcement, and dispatch. None of those desks publish a roadside EV charge.
Confirm AAA before you expect a plug
Calling AAA still makes sense for flats, lockouts, and wrecks. It’s a club with a tow network behind it. It’s not automatically a charger for a dead pack. This page couldn’t confirm a published AAA Colorado policy for on-site EV charging. Open the AAA app and read your membership booklet. Ask whether this will be a flatbed tow. Ask whether the truck carries EV charging gear.
Get that answer while you still have phone battery. Don’t assume a club truck packs a Level 2 brick. Many empty-pack calls still move as flatbed tows. The car goes toward a public stall or a shop. Then you wait on that stall to add enough range.
Superchargers sit in Denver, Boulder, Lakewood, Thornton, and Lone Tree. Castle Rock, Centennial, Highlands Ranch, and Idaho Springs have sites too. Confirm the stall in your charging app before you roll.
AAA may still jump a 12-volt battery for you. That jump overlaps with CDOT Safety Patrol work. It also overlaps with the operators we refer. A jump helps when the car is dark and locked. It doesn’t refill a pack sitting at zero.
For a longer coverage comparison, read Tesla, AAA, and a local mobile rescue. That post stays on who covers which script. This one stays on the charge versus tow choice.
E-470 will jump you, not charge you
Stall on E-470 and you’re on a cashless toll loop. Pull to the shoulder and stay out of the lanes. Dial *470 for E-470’s own roadside assistance line. The authority lists flat tires, jump-starts, fluid top-offs, phone help, and debris removal. Dial *CSP, which is *277, for State Patrol. E-470 doesn’t publish an EV charging service.
Peña Boulevard is the only road into Denver International. It’s city-maintained, and it’s not an interstate. CDOT’s patrol list names I-70 East to Airport Blvd. Don’t assume Peña is on that same published sheet.
What a mobile EV charge actually is
Charge Pro DEN is a referral line for stranded drivers. We don’t own trucks, and we don’t employ technicians. We don’t set prices for the visit. We match you with an independent local operator. That operator quotes you before any cable goes in. They bill you directly for the work they do.
The kit is a 240-volt Level 2 source. Tesla drivers get a native NACS plug on the lead. Other EVs use a CCS or J1772 adapter. Typical charging time adds about 10 to 20 miles. That add happens in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. The clock starts when charging starts, not before. It’s not an arrival time, and we don’t promise one.
Those miles let you drive under your own power. You’re not waiting on a public stall from a flatbed. For an empty pack, use out-of-charge recovery. For the broader choice, read charge in place or tow.
Operators we refer handle Tesla and every major EV brand. A stuck charge port is a latch problem, not a tow problem. Ask the operator about the port before anyone hooks a winch.
Empty pack versus a dead 12-volt
January’s normal low around Denver sits near 18 degrees. A long sit in a cold DEN lot can kill the 12-volt. The traction pack may still hold plenty of energy. The 12-volt runs computers, contactors, and door locks. When it dies, the whole car looks finished.
CDOT patrol and many club trucks will try a jump. Operators we refer can jump a 12-volt on site. They can replace one on site when that’s the job. If the dash showed low range first, treat it as an empty pack. If it sat dark through a freeze, start with the 12-volt. Can roadside jump an EV 12-volt walks that split.
Recurrent Auto studied more than 30,000 U.S. EVs in winter. At 32 degrees, EVs kept about 78 percent of max range. Cold is why a morning buffer can vanish on I-70 west of Golden. It’s not a reason to guess the next charger.
When a tow is still the right tool
A roadside charge doesn’t straighten bent suspension. If the car can’t roll, you need a tow. AAA and other clubs exist for that kind of work. If the car must reach a specific shop, a charge may delay the hook.
CRS 42-4-1202 covers a disabled vehicle on a highway. You may not stop on the paved main-traveled part of a highway. The exception is a vehicle so disabled it can’t be moved off. Hazard lights must be on under CRS 42-4-230.
CRS 42-4-1803 sets no fixed hour count for abandonment. No Colorado statute treats a disabled EV as a special class. The Colorado Public Utilities Commission regulates towing carriers. Exact tow fee figures weren’t verified for this page.
Tesla roadside is another script
Tesla has its own roadside path in the app. Confirm what it covers for your VIN and year. Don’t assume Tesla sends a charger to you. Don’t assume Tesla replaces a 12-volt on the shoulder. Read Tesla roadside, CDOT patrol, or a local boost for the call order. Then confirm the coverage in the Tesla app.
How to choose from a metro shoulder
Turn your hazards on and stay visible to traffic. Stay in the car if that’s the safer choice. If you’re on a listed CDOT Safety Patrol segment, check the clock. During published hours, that free jump is for a dark 12-volt. Skip it when the pack was already at zero.
On E-470, try *470 for the same jump-and-tire list. If you hold AAA, ask about a flatbed. Ask whether anyone on the truck carries EV charging equipment. Write the answers down before you hang up.
If the car is otherwise fine and the pack is empty, call for range. A mobile EV charging referral adds that range in place. We serve the Denver metro from the plains to the foothills. The operator quotes you before they start work. Call (720) 738-6950 when you want that match. Treat it as a referral number, not a rolling promise.
Frequently asked questions
Does AAA bring a charge to a dead EV?
This page couldn’t confirm a published AAA Colorado policy for on-site EV charging. Ask AAA directly before you wait on a truck. CDOT Safety Patrol will jump a 12-volt on listed segments. An independent mobile operator is the party that brings Level 2 to the car.
Does CDOT Safety Patrol charge electric cars?
CDOT doesn’t publish an EV charging service. Its Safety Patrol and breakdown pages don’t mention EV charging. Hours follow the windows CDOT publishes on its site.
Can you keep AAA and still call for a mobile charge?
You can keep both, because they solve different problems. AAA and CDOT move or jump a car. A mobile operator adds range on site instead. There’s no membership with Charge Pro DEN.
