AAA won’t charge a Tesla pack in Thornton. It’ll jump a 12-volt or send a tow. That’s the gap on I-25 and on SH-7 at 120th Avenue. It’s the same on the E-470 north loop. Charge Pro DEN’s a referral line for the Denver metro. We match stranded drivers with independent local operators. Those operators bring a 240-volt Level 2 source to the car. They quote you before they start, and they bill you directly.
Thornton isn’t one power map
Thornton covers about 36.5 square miles in Adams County, with a slice in Weld. Census PEP 2024 puts the city near 146,700 people. The city’s own page is plain about electricity. Xcel Energy or United Power serves you, and it depends on the house. You can’t read it off the ZIP. 80023, 80229, 80233, and 80602 can fall on either side. That split doesn’t change a roadside boost. It does change who you call about a garage charger.
North Thornton along 144th Avenue is mostly newer housing. So are Eastlake, Signal Creek, Hunters Glen, and North Creek. About 22.7 percent of Thornton’s homes predate 1980. A lot of those north-end drivers charge at home. The stranded calls are road calls. You ran the I-25 commute back from Denver. You sat on 120th until the pack ran down. You launched onto E-470 and came up short. South of that, Original Thornton still runs a tighter grid. That’s Washington Street, Colorado Boulevard, and York Street. Older panels and overnight cold sits show up more there. Riverdale sits on the east edge toward Brighton and Commerce City.
This is north-metro high plains. There’s no foothill cover. Winters hit hard, and summers run hot and dry. A car that sat at Carpenter Park can look dead by morning. The pack can still have miles.
What AAA actually sends for a dead Tesla
AAA’s a membership club for every kind of car. An empty Tesla pack is one more ticket in that mix. The usual answer is a flatbed, not a charge. The truck aims you at a public stall or at home. A 12-volt jump may be on the menu, but a pack charge isn’t.
Tesla roadside follows a similar line. It’ll often cover a 12-volt jump. It won’t roll a Level 2 source to your bumper. We laid that out in what Tesla roadside will and will not cover. See also when your EV dies, does AAA bring a charge or only a tow.
CDOT Safety Patrol is free on listed freeway segments. I-25 coverage runs from 120th Avenue south to Arapahoe Road. 120th is SH-7 through Thornton. A stall at 144th sits north of that published segment. Weekday hours are 6:00 to 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 to 7:00 p.m. Weekend hours are 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The published list includes flat tires and jump-starts. It also lists emergency fuel, minor mechanical help, debris, and incident support. CDOT’s pages don’t mention EV charging. The state will jump a 12-volt. It won’t fill a pack.
On E-470, you pull to the shoulder and dial *470. The authority lists tires, fluids, jump-starts, phone help, and debris. There’s no EV pack charge on that list. *CSP, which is *277, still reaches State Patrol.
What a mobile Level 2 visit actually is
The pros we connect you with are licensed and insured. They’re independent, and they own the rigs. Charge Pro DEN owns none of that gear and employs no technicians. An operator typically brings a 240-volt Level 2 source with a native NACS plug. CCS and J1772 adapters cover non-Tesla cars. Fifteen to thirty minutes of charging usually adds about 10 to 20 miles. That’s time on the plug, not an arrival window.
If the dash is dark, check the 12-volt first. The pack may still show range on the display. Operators can jump or replace that battery on site. Tesla and every major EV brand are in scope. For a Thornton Tesla, that’s Tesla roadside rescue. The local hub is EV charging in Thornton. If you’re already on the interstate, read EV died on I-25 through the north metro.
Confirm Xcel or United Power by address
A curb charge doesn’t care which utility owns the pole. Your wall unit does. United Power publishes United EV, a ChargePoint Home Flex on a monthly service agreement. It also lists the EV Make-Ready Wiring Rebate. There’s an EV Home Charge Panel Upgrade Rebate too. RTD1 is the time-of-use rate with Simple Saver scheduling. Xcel publishes EV Accelerate At Home and the EV Home Wiring Rebate. It also names Optimize Your Charge, Charging Perks, and RE-TOU. The Residential EV Rebate and PCAN are on that list too. Rebate dollar amounts aren’t confirmed here. Ask the utility that actually bills the house.
Thornton’s site tells you to confirm by address. Do that before you blame the charger. We walked through that home-side mess already. See Thornton backup power when you’re not sure who serves your street. Northglenn sits on the same Xcel and United Power split. It’s right along the N Line.
If you’re already on the shoulder
CRS 42-4-1202 is the disabled-vehicle rule. Outside a business or residential district, don’t leave a car in the travel lanes. The exception is a vehicle so disabled you couldn’t move it off. Hazards have to be on under CRS 42-4-230. A violation’s a class B traffic infraction. Colorado has no separate statute for a dead EV. The same shoulder law covers a Tesla and a pickup.
I-25 North Express Lanes were built with a minimum 8-foot outside shoulder. If you stall there, move to that right outside shoulder. Don’t sit in a live express lane. Colorado State Patrol handles crashes and abandoned-vehicle calls. Abandoned status is an officer’s call under CRS 42-4-1803. The statute sets no fixed hour clock.
The RTD N Line stops at Eastlake/124th and Thornton/Northglenn. A dead car in those lots is still a private-property problem. HB22-1314, the Colorado Towing Bill of Rights, governs many nonconsensual tows. Exact tow fees aren’t confirmed here. Ask the lot before you assume you can wait.
Empty pack, or a 12-volt that froze overnight
Recurrent Auto’s winter study tracked more than 30,000 U.S. EVs. EVs keep about 78 percent of max range at 32 degrees. They keep about 70 percent at 20 degrees, on average. AAA’s 2026 dynamometer work reported about 39 percent range loss at 20 degrees. Those are fleet averages, not a forecast for your car. Denver went from 47 to minus 19 in about 48 hours in January 2024. Thornton sits fully exposed on that same high-plains shelf.
A car that sat by the Denver Premium Outlets corridor can look fully dead. So can one at the Thornton Recreation Center. Overnight in Original Thornton does the same thing. The pack can still be fine. The 12-volt failed first. A club tow in that case is the wrong first move. A jump or an on-site 12-volt swap is the right one.
Tesla Superchargers exist in Thornton, and in Northglenn and Westminster next door. If the car will still creep, a public stall can finish the job. If it won’t wake, that stall doesn’t help. That’s when you want a Level 2 source at the bumper, not a membership flatbed.
Match with a local operator
Stay out of the travel lane, and keep hazards on. On E-470, *470 is the authority’s line for jumps and tires. On covered I-25 during Safety Patrol hours, CDOT can still help with a 12-volt. Neither program charges the pack.
If the traction battery’s empty, you need an operator with a Level 2 source. Call (720) 738-6950 and we’ll match you with a local independent pro. The operator sets the price, and we don’t. They tell you the quote before they plug in.
